I’ve been using GIS since 1993, starting with IDRISI and moving on to Arc (View, Info, GIS, Pro and Online). To a lesser extent I’ve dabbled with open source, but I’ve mostly worked within the ESRI domain.

My main occupation over the last 2+ decades has been with the College of the Environment (formerly Huxley College) at Western Washington University, in Bellingham, WA, where I was:

  • Assistant Director for the Spatial Institute

  • Adjunct Faculty for GIS, GPS and Cartography classes

  • GIS Specialist (technical support and GIS projects)

Prior to working at WWU I worked for TerraLogic GIS, Whatcom County Planning / GIS and as an independent GIS contractor.

I have also been teaching workshops for over 20 years (most often these days with Warthog IS, but also Northwest Environmental Training Center and TerraLogic GIS in years past) and provide GIS and cartography training, consulting and services for clients.

As a cartographer, my most well-known work (to date) is the map of the Salish Sea & Surrounding Basin which was created as part of the (successful) campaign to get the name ‘Salish Sea’ adopted by Canada and USA in 2009. The map was revised and updated in 2023. I've given a number of talks and interviews on the process of creating the map.

Hi, my name is Stefan Freelan and I make maps...

Bio

.

I received a MS in Geography from the College of the Environment, WWU and a BA in Environmental Ethics from Fairhaven College, WWU.

My masters thesis was on Temporal GIS.

In addition to GIS… I have been known to: play the drums, juggle, sail, and take road trips in a Sprinter van. I built my own house, occasionally work as a stage manager (Moisture Festival, Oregon Country Fair), have toured with the New Old Time Chautauqua and was an on-site project manager overseeing large-scale, volunteer-built playgrounds for 10 years.
