Buying / Printing the Salish Sea Map
For the 2023 updated map I was able to obtain better data to produce a higher resolution map than was possible for the 2009 original. As such, printing at poster size is now an option.
Posters can be ordered via Printify (an online Print-on-Demand service). They use high quality paper and ink and I’ve been happy with both the speed and quality of their service.
11x17” maps can be purchased directly from me (I find that my local printer can do a better job than the Print-on-Demand for 11x17).
You can also purchase a high-resolution PDF file that can be used to print your own map, 11x17 or larger (not for resale purposes).
You can also download the ‘public’ version (a slightly lower resolution PDF) for free, below. See Printing notes below.
For 11x17, I recommend purchasing the map directly from me for the best quality paper and ink as well as printed colors that I know look good (different printers vary considerably). I also have them printed ‘full bleed’ (i.e., so there is not a white border around the edges of the map). For anything larger than 11x17, I recommend either purchasing the printed poster or the high resolution PDF.

Over the years, I have given a few museums and aquariums permission to print and sell the map (11×17). If you are involved with a non-profit that would like to print and sell the maps in your gift shop please feel free to contact me.

Individuals are welcome to download the .pdf file (see above) and take it (or the URL link) to a print shop. You can also purchase the high resolution PDF.
For printing, what you want is a high-quality, color laser printer that prints 11×17 on high-quality paper. It doesn’t have to be photo-quality (printing or paper) but it can be (that is sometimes easier to find). I prefer a semi-gloss or matte paper, but glossy paper will work. Lately I’ve been printing maps on what is called matte (but is actually semi-gloss), 100# paper.
Ink-jet printers typically don’t use ‘archival’ inks so will fade over time.
I do request that (if possible) you print the map as a two-sided document, as the front and the back were designed as a single piece of art.
I recommend that you find a place that does ‘full bleed’ printing (i.e., can print the map with the color going all the way to the edge of the paper without a white border). If you can’t find a place that does full bleed be sure to specify ‘Fit to Page’ so that the full map is printed (slightly reduced in size to fit the printable area of the paper, given the printer they are using).
Note that different printers will produce colors that vary quite a bit… So you may need to try a few different printers (and/or print shops) to find one that ‘works’…
For the ‘best’ printing, color quality, and resolution I encourage you to purchase the 11x17” map from me (above) as I have experimented with numerous print shops to find one that I like.
For printing sizes larger than 11x17" I recommend purchasing the poster or the high resolution digital file for the best results (above).
